Lake Helen, the “Gem” of Florida is a quaint small town that lies SW of DeLand FL, the home of Stetson University. Established in 1888, Lake Helen was named for the daughter of Henry DeLand.
It was originally a winter retreat for northeasterners and with the addition of two hotels, the Harlan Hotel , named after Henry DeLand’s son, and a little later the Granville Hotel, became a destination spot for New Englanders anxious to retreat from the harsh winters.
The modern day Lake Helen is still a special place known for its tree-lined streets, historic older homes and churches, of which many are included in the biennial Christmas Tour of Homes, and an equestrian center that features many events throughout the year.
City Hall is in the old school house which has been completely restored, and one of the school rooms is a museum of Lake Helen relics and memorabilia.
Lake Helen is home to Volusia Pines Elementary School, and The Ivy Hawn Charter School. Residents of Lake Helen look forward to coming home after a hectic and busy day at work, driving in traffic, to a slower pace and to the quiet neighborhoods where they live. Lake Helen’s location provides easy access to the attractions in the Orlando area, and to the east coast beaches of Daytona Beach and New Smyrna Beach.
